[...] New and improved navigation devices are an inevitable part of any redesign exercise. But there’s something curious about the apparent desire to offer ‘new destination pages that are homepages in their own right and will compete with non public sector equivalents for attention’. Hang on - compete? What happened to the Mayo-Steinberg principles? [...]

I'm not actually sure that government actively wants to run information industries, Charles - more that it has always done so, and doesn't see any particular reason to change. Tom's paper lays down a pretty serious challenge in that regard.

Postcodes are a national asset, though any geographer would be right in telling you that they're not very accurate - they can cover a wide geographical area, and don't include addresses you might want to know about (cemeteries being an obvious one..).

But yes, there is huge value that is kept locked away because - as my colleague Mike Cross pointed out in a very good speech recently - government today wants to run information industries just as in the 1970s it thought it could do a better job than everyone else of running telephone companies, car makers and so on. Really, it needs to concentrate on the tasks that it's best suited or positioned to do (gather national data on weather or geography or tides or health) and make that available to us, the citizens, to do with what we will.

That said, Sam's work on thegovernmentsays is brilliant.

Thanks Sam... no, I hadn't seen travel.thegovernmentsays.com. And I'm guessing (hoping?) the FCO hasn't seen it either. Their website says: 'Capture and republication of Country Specific Travel Advice notices is not permitted. Any person who captures and republishes these Travel Advice notices will be liable to prosecution.' Banged to rights on that one, Sam, surely?
